Burnout vs Misalignment
Ya’ll this is something people always get wrong. Burnout and misalignment are related, but they are not the same thing.
Many people mistake one for the other because they can feel similar.
Burnout sounds like:
“I’m exhausted.”
“I can’t keep up.”
“I need a break.”
“Everything feels overwhelming.”
A vacation or lighter workload often provides noticeable relief, even if only temporarily.
Misalignment sounds like:
“I don’t know who I’m becoming anymore.”
“This isn’t me.”
“I should be grateful, but I’m not fulfilled.”
“I’ve succeeded at something I no longer want.”
You can take a three-week vacation, come back on Monday, and by Tuesday you’re wondering, “Why am I still here?”
Here’s where people get confused
Misalignment often creates burnout.
Imagine a woman who spends years saying yes, meeting expectations, climbing the ladder, and being the reliable one.
She eventually becomes exhausted. She assumes the problem is burnout.
She rests.
The exhaustion improves.
But the emptiness doesn’t.
That’s because the real issue wasn’t just overwork. She had outgrown the identity she built her career around.
A simple way to tell the difference
Ask yourself:
If I had unlimited energy tomorrow, would I still want this life?
→ If your answer is yes, you’re probably dealing primarily with burnout.
→If your answer is no, you’re probably experiencing misalignment.
→If your answer is “I don’t know anymore,” you’re likely dealing with both.
This distinction sits at the heart of the work I do with women who are questioning their careers. Before we discuss a pivot, a business, or an exit plan, we first identify what actually needs to change.
If unlimited energy would not make you want your current life, the problem may not be your capacity. It may be your direction.
