You Need Expression, Rather than Repression (part 2)
I spent about an hour meditating recently.
At first, I was simply trying to quiet my mind.
But eventually something interesting happened.
I started having deep conversations in my head about everything.
Politics. Religion. Women. Work. Relationships. Life.
And I realized something:
I have a lot inside me that needs somewhere to go.
I’ve talked before about how your mind can drown in unexpressed thoughts.
I’m starting to understand that idea more deeply.
Meditation helps me become aware of what’s happening inside my mind.
But awareness isn’t always enough.
Sometimes those thoughts and emotions need expression.
You need to speak.
Write.
Journal.
Create something.
Talk to someone.
For me, sometimes I need to turn the camera on and make a video.
I don’t always know exactly what I’m going to say beforehand.
Sometimes speaking is how I discover what I’ve been trying to say.
And I think this is another part of mental regulation that doesn’t get talked about enough.
Regulating yourself isn’t always about becoming calmer or suppressing what you’re feeling.
Sometimes it’s about taking what’s inside you and giving it a productive direction.
I’m starting to see a pattern:
Pressure → Meditation → Awareness → Expression → Clarity → Action
Life creates pressure.
Meditation helps me see what that pressure is doing to me.
Expression gives those thoughts and emotions somewhere to go.
And afterward, I can usually see myself and my situation more clearly.
Maybe that’s why holding everything inside for too long can become so destructive.
Your mind needs somewhere to put what it’s carrying.
What about you?
Where do you put the thoughts and emotions that build up inside you?
