🎥 Coffee Hour Replay: The /ɜː/ Sound (bird, word, learn)

Thank you to everyone who joined the Coffee Hour!
For those who couldn’t make it, I just created a course in the classroom called Coffee Hour where I uploaded the video, a summary and the transcription! 😀💪
In this session we worked on one of the most important English vowels: /ɜː/.
We explored:
• why vowel length matters for clarity
• the difference between /ə/ (schwa) and /ɜː/
• how to position the tongue, lips, and airflow
• common spelling patterns: ir, er, ur, ear,
Also, we learned that when you see /ɜː/ with the two dots (:), it means hold the sound longer.
You can hear it in words like:
bird – learn – first – word – work – girl
Try saying them slowly and keeping the same vowel shape each time.
