A Comprehensive Review of AI Agents: Transforming Possibilities in Technology and Beyond (George Washington University, August 2025)
Abstract:
AI agents have advanced from simple rule-based systems to sophisticated, autonomous entities capable of perception, reasoning, and decision-making in complex environments. This transformation has been driven by the rise of big data, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and multi-agent coordination. Despite significant progress, creating unified agents that seamlessly combine cognition, planning, and interaction remains a major challenge. Current research draws on cognitive science models, hierarchical reinforcement learning, and large language model reasoning, while also grappling with ethical, safety, and interpretability concerns. By examining breakthroughs, ongoing challenges, and future directions, this review provides guidance for developing more robust, adaptable, and trustworthy AI agents.
