First post… always awkward.
So this is - I guess - the first post.
Where do I start…
Hmm…
I was never great at creative writing…
Damn…
Just write something.
Ok…
It’s a grey summer morning here in London. Just past 9am. As it’s mid-summer in Britain, I’ve opted for my ‘slightly less thick’ fleece today. I don’t want to catch a cold after all.
I have just made the first of 8 cups of tea that I drink on a daily basis after spending the last hour conceptualising and creating this community at my kitchen table.
Now I’m just doing that ‘thing’ when you look at the settings of the profile that you just created - fine tuning the commas and removing / adding words. I’m trying to match the fragments of the compulsive vision of the idea for this community that I had in my head an hour ago with the words on my screen.
Now - doubt has started to set in, I’m starting to think that this might not work.
But f*ck it - at least I’m giving it a go.
If it fails it’s just another item in the list of many that no one will ever see - so I have nothing to lose.
So…👇
My name is Connor. I am originally from Wales (the town deadpool owns) and I have a wife and 2 dogs. I really like life. I’m definitely not a ‘glass half empty’ sort of person and I am extremely grateful for everything that I have. In short, I count myself as very fortunate.
However - I do have this one slightly annoying problem.
The only subject that I really like talking about (other than the problem that my SaaS solves)…
Is ‘SaaS’.
So unfortunately for me, when it comes to discussing subjects like ‘which is the most optimal pricing strategy for a post-trial transportation and logistic SaaS app’ my wife doesn’t share quite the same enthusiasm as I do.
Come to think of it - neither do any of my immediate friends!
So my only resort has been the r/SaaS subreddit, which I post and engage with regularly.
However there’s a new - more ‘recent’ problem…
AI.
It seems that the ‘hustle bro’ culture has worked out that the narrative of vibe coding an app and marketing it on TikTok makes a ‘technically’ believable story - so full steam ahead they are going.
They spam daily with constant pearls of wisdom. Modestly titled posts like ‘$10k MRR in 6 weeks’ and ‘How I Validated My Idea Analysing 1 Billion Competitor Websites’… yada yada… are seeping onto the subreddit.
What bothers me about these people ISN’T that it’s so clearly all bull shit stories (I can filter through what’s real and what’s not real quite easily).
It doesn’t even bother me that there’s literally no moderation in r/SaaS…
What actually bothers me IS these people are being allowed to make out like SaaS is easy.
According to them, the only thing that’s missing is that ‘you’re not marketing enough - bro’.
This annoys me because in my years of experience - the complete OPPOSITE is actually true.
Not only is SaaS NOT easy but it’s INCREDIBLY hard and definitely the HARDEST model to crack (other than space)…
But that’s why I love it!
SaaS to me is by far the most fascinating of the 21st century business models. It is seemingly placing itself into the forefront of all innovation recently and when done correctly, the glossy facade of an app allows it to be disguised as - ‘simple’.
But anyone that has ‘done it’ or is ‘doing it’ knows the truth…
If it appears ‘simple’ then that engine is nothing but the genius result of years of meticulous fine tuning.
Genuinely nothing makes me sit back and tilt my head in awe more than when I find myself casually checking out onto the monthly plan of a SaaS that I didn’t even know existed until ‘5 minutes ago’.
“How did they do that?” - I think…
I wonder about all the variables that went into that invisible ‘guide’ - who just matched my problems with their product seamlessly and strolled me through an entire onboarding - without me even noticing until I’ve handed over cash!
I think that it’s brilliant.
Anyway, mentioning ‘heads tilting’ - my dog needs to go out — either for a wee or to chase the garden pigeons (or maybe both).
For those here - thank you and welcome! ☺️
