A paycheck, not a nest egg

Here is a reframe that I realized after I retired.

Retirement is not a savings problem. It is a cash-flow problem.

During your working years you never needed a giant nest egg. You needed a paycheck that showed up and covered the bills. Retirement just takes the paycheck away and hands you the nest egg instead, then asks you to make it last thirty years.

So stop asking how big the nest egg is. Ask how much shows up every month after you stop working, and from how many sources.

That question moves you from saving to building. A rental check. A royalty check. A small digital business. Little paychecks that keep coming, and do not all rise and fall together.

You do not need a bigger nest egg. You need more monthly checks than you have now.
