Anticholinergic Toxidrome?
Anticholinergic agents block the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) at muscarinic receptors, leading to inhibition of parasympathetic activity — essentially causing “sympathetic overdrive” symptoms.
🧾 Classic Mnemonic
"Hot as a hare, Dry as a bone, Red as a beet, Blind as a bat, Mad as a hatter, and Full as a flask."
Hot as a hare-Hyperthermia-Loss of sweating (anhidrosis) impairs heat dissipation
Dry as a bone-Dry skin & mucous membranes-Blocked sweat and salivary glands
Red as a beet-Flushed skin-Vasodilation from heat retention
Blind as a bat-Mydriasis (pupil dilation) & blurred vision-Blocked ciliary muscle accommodation
Mad as a hatter-Delirium, hallucinations-CNS blockade of acetylcholine
Full as a flask-Urinary retention-Inhibition of bladder detrusor contraction (parasympathetic tone suppressed)
