Pests, Pets, and the Stuff Nobody Tells You Before You Go

🌿 BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME
Camping pest issues are won or lost before you even get in the car. Here’s what to do before you drive away.
✓ Check the weather AND the recent pest activity in your area (tick boom seasons, mosquito surges, bear activity, etc.)
✓ Know what venomous animals live where you’re going (spiders, snakes, scorpions, jellyfish if coastal)
✓ Pack your pest kit (full list on our page in the intro course duh!)
✓ Treat your gear with permethrin spray 48 hours before you go (clothes, tents, packs — NOT skin, never on cats)
✓ Confirm flea/tick/heartworm prevention is up to date for any pets
✓ Save the address and phone number of the nearest 24-hour emergency room AND vet (offline if possible — no signal at most campsites)
✓ Tell someone your itinerary, expected return date, and emergency contacts
