Chapter 1 Mini Assignment (Interior Design)
Chapter 1 Mini Assignment
1. What is the room’s purpose?
· The room serves as a multi-functional personal sanctuary. It transitions between productivity, relaxation, and storage. Hosting a cluster of several zones.
2. Who uses the room and how?
· The room is primarily my personal space, which often becomes a family space when my two kids come in to either watch TV, unwind, or co-sleep.
· To elaborate on the usage of my room, I will break it down into zones.
Productivity Zone – A corner that triggers the shift into work and design mode; there is an office desk housing a laptop, a keyboard, a mouse and an additional monitor for splitting screens and a box for documents and art supplies for the kids.
Mini Pharmacy Zone – An emergency care bin holding several pharmaceuticals like Band-Aids, ointments, and painkillers.
Wardrobe & Apparel Zone – A chest of drawers, a 3-door and 4-drawer wardrobe (using upper hanging space only because the lower drawer space has termites eating it)
Self-Care Zone – An area on top of the chest of drawers that has accessories along with facial and body products.
Relaxation Zone – An area dedicated to sleep, comfort and unwinding, featuring a queen-size bed and a wall-mounted TV. 40% of the time, it’s a shared space where my kids crawl into bed with me to relax, watch TV, and sleep.
Storage Zones – Maximising storage with the use of suitcases and storage bags for excess clothes, blankets, sheets, towels.
Hair Styling Zone – A bag holding several hair styling tools and appliances
3. What design elements work well?
· For the room interior design, my approach focuses on a versatile aesthetic. I prefer matching bedding and curtains to create a unified look to blend with neutral-tone rugs and wall paint that seamlessly adapt to seasonal décor.
4. What elements create problems?
· The existing wardrobe lacks specialised space for all my clothes, shoes, Jewellery, hats, bags, and bulky bedding. And because of this, I have opted for the use of several storage bags, which force items into plain view, creating visual clutter and a lack of privacy for personal belongings.
· Aesthetically, I feel a sense of stagnation; a 4-year-long lack of change in the room colour and styling has magnified the sense of urgency for an aesthetic makeover.
5. Is the room functional? Why or why not?
· No, it is not because of the present aesthetic stagnation, visual clutter, Inadequate Storage functionality, and financial Constraints.
6. What immediate improvements would enhance the space?
· Change to Aesthetics (Gold & Black)
· Removal of a half-occupied wardrobe
· Sand and paint existing dresser
· Switch the bed frame
· Insert pictures to match decor
