Quantum Mechanics Matters
Why? Because it's the bedrock of our reality. Let's take a few facts to illustrate this:
💠 Atoms are composed of electrons and a nucleus (proton/neutron bonded together). There is considerable distance between the electron belts and the core - so most of an atom is empty space.
💠 Protons and neutrons (the core of our atoms) are made of Quarks. And since Quarks change from one pairing to another and from one flavour (type) to another all the time, the combination of particles making up any solid object (including you) is constantly changing.
💠 Neutrinos are so small that for a long time they were thought to be massless. They mainly come from the Sun - some come from the centre of the Earth. They fly at (almost) the speed of light and go straight through matter (because it's mainly empty space). Like Quarks, neutrinos can change from one form to another - but nobody's caught them doing it. Trillions are passing through your little finger right now.
💠 Entanglement happens across vast distances instantaneously. This has led to new ideas about information exchange and brought about new technologies. When poked, an entangled particle will react at exactly the same moment as its partner even if they are light years apart.
💠 Superposition has been found to be a permanent feature of electrons. When something is superpositioned, it's in two (or more!) states at one time. This is where Schrödinger's Cat comes from. This means that any number of possible states are open to us at any point, although 3D reality tricks us into believing that things stay pretty much the same.
Just five examples of things that are real because quantum mechanics exists, yet they all defy the reasoning of our senses.
What does this mean for you? How would you describe the impact of quantum mechanics on YOUR world line?
