Deutz D2.9 High Pressure Fuel Pump
Machine:Deutz D2.9 diesel
Issue:Strange ticking / mechanical noise coming from the high-pressure fuel pump at idle.
Symptoms:
- Engine starts and runs normally
- Noise constant at idle
- Sound localized near the HP pump
- No immediate drivability issues
Initial Thoughts:High-pressure pumps on common rail systems can make mechanical noise, but a noticeable tick raises suspicion of internal wear, cavitation, or abnormal rail pressure control.
Diagnostics:
- Checked for fault codes in the ECU
- Listened with a mechanic’s stethoscope to confirm the pump area
- Compared noise with engine RPM changes
- Verified engine operation and fuel delivery were stable
Questions for other techs:Has anyone seen these pumps develop a noticeable ticking noise before failure, or is this considered normal mechanical noise on the D2.9?
Goal:Trying to determine if the pump should be monitored or replaced before it fails.
