question: slip versus underglaze

Here’s a pot I just finished carving and am contemplating just layering some colored slip and coating it with a clear to make sure my carvings are showcased. For some reason every time I use an underglaze with them, they run under the clear. Does anyone have any tips to help prevent underglazes from running with a clear on top? They run even if I put the underglaze on greenware. Someone told me to try to use hairspray to secure the underglaze but wanted to see if anyone else here had any ideas?
