Videos and more tutorials will follow, but for now, the following tips can get you started... Let's also share any insights in the comments and grow together 🔥
[Start with energy and enthusiasm]
“Hello, everyone! Welcome to Session 1 of our Podcast Hosting Course—I’m so excited to have you all here today! My name is [Your Name], and I’ll be your guide as we dive into the amazing world of podcast hosting. Over the next 30 minutes, we’re going to explore what it takes to be a great host, have some fun with interactive exercises, and leave you with tools to start hosting confidently.
Are you ready? Let’s get started!”
1. Warm-Up: Podcast-Style Introductions (5 minutes)
“Let’s kick things off with a warm-up activity to loosen up and get us into the podcasting spirit.
Here’s what we’re going to do: I want each of you to imagine you’re launching your own podcast. Take a moment to think about what your show would be about—anything you want—and then, in 60 seconds, introduce yourself as the host.
Here’s an example:
‘Welcome to The Curious Mindset podcast, where we explore the habits of successful people. I’m [Your Name], and I’ll be your guide as we unlock the secrets of achievement.’
Keep it fun, keep it simple, and add your personal flair. I’ll give you 30 seconds to think about it—then we’ll go around the room. Ready? Go!”
[Allow time for introductions, give light encouragement, and celebrate creativity.]
“Wow! You all sound like pros already. Great energy, and I love the diversity in themes!”
2. What Makes a Great Podcast Host? (5 minutes)
“Now that we’ve heard from you, let’s talk about what makes a great podcast host.
Think of your favorite podcast—what draws you in? Is it the host’s energy? Their voice? The way they make guests or topics come alive?
As a podcast host, you’re not just speaking into a mic—you’re a storyteller, a guide, and, most importantly, someone your audience connects with.
Let me give you three key traits of a great host:
1. Engagement: Keeping your audience hooked.
2. Clarity: Speaking with purpose and confidence.
3. Authenticity: Letting your personality shine through.
For example, think of someone like Trevor Noah—relatable, engaging, and full of personality—or someone like Oprah, who’s deeply curious and empathetic.
Now, ask yourself: Which of these traits do you already have, and which do you want to build?”
3. Building Your Podcast Persona (10 minutes)
“Every great podcast host has a unique style. Let’s find yours.
First, we’re going to do a fun exercise called ‘Find Your Voice.’ I’ll read out a short script, and I want you to try reading it in three different styles:
1. Excited and energetic.
2. Calm and soothing.
3. Professional and serious.
Here’s the script:
‘Welcome to my podcast! Today, we’re diving into the world of mindset and motivation. Let’s explore what it takes to be your best self.’
[Model the three styles, then guide participants as they try.]
Awesome work, everyone! Which style felt most natural to you? Which one do you think fits your podcast’s tone?
Now, let’s build your hook. Take 2 minutes to write a one-liner introducing your podcast. For example:
‘Welcome to Beyond the Mic, where we uncover the untold stories of everyday heroes.’
Once you’ve written it, let’s hear them. Don’t overthink—this is all about finding your flow!”
[Share hooks, offer quick positive feedback, and encourage creativity.]
4. Active Listening and Interview Basics (5 minutes)
“As a podcast host, one of your most powerful skills is listening. Good listening helps you connect with your audience and create meaningful conversations.
Here’s a simple rule: ‘Yes, and…’. Borrowed from improv, this means building on what your guest says. Instead of moving to the next question, dive deeper. For example:
Guest: ‘I started my business out of my garage.’
Host: ‘That’s amazing! Tell me about the moment you realized your garage would become your launchpad to success.’
Let’s practice! Pair up, and spend two minutes asking your partner questions about their day. The only rule? Build on their answers instead of jumping to the next question. Ready? Go!”
[Debrief the activity briefly, highlighting moments of curiosity and connection.]
“Great job, everyone! Remember: podcasting isn’t about asking questions—it’s about creating conversations.”
5. Energy and Connection (5 minutes)
“Now, let’s talk about energy. A monotone host can make even the most exciting topic sound dull, while a host with energy and authenticity makes listeners stay tuned.
Let me show you the difference:
[Play or mimic an example of an engaging host vs. a dull host.]
Hear that? Big difference, right?
Now, it’s your turn! Take 2-3 sentences from your earlier hook and practice saying it with ENERGY. Imagine your favorite audience is listening right now. Ready? Let’s hear it!”
[Guide participants as they practice, giving encouraging feedback.]
“Great work! Remember, energy doesn’t mean yelling—it’s about connecting authentically and bringing enthusiasm to your voice.”
6. Closing Challenge and Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
“As we wrap up our first session, I want to leave you with a challenge:
Your homework: Record a 1-minute podcast intro and share it with the group or someone you trust. Focus on using your natural style, energy, and confidence.
Finally, here’s a thought to take with you:
‘Podcasting is storytelling in its most personal and powerful form. Let your voice inspire the world!’
Thank you for your energy today—I can’t wait to hear your intros. See you in the next session!”
