Foods for cold weather
I'm not sure what part of the country everyone is from. But if you're from the east coast like me then you're dealing with sub-zero temperatures right now.
Here's a list of some foods that will build heat and stamina from the inside out for the body:
Sweet potatoes
Yams
Beets
Carrots
Parsnips
Turnips
Rutabaga
Jerusalem artichokes
Winter squash (butternut, kabocha, acorn)
Best eaten: roasted, braised, stewed or mashed with warming spices.
Warming spices & aromatics (essential)
These are non-negotiable for cold weather warmth:
Ginger/garlic/onion/cinnamon/cloves/nutmegallspice/black pepper/cayenne/chili flakes/turmeric/cardamom/star anise/fenugreek/cumin
These increase circulation, digestion, and internal heat
Healthy fats that generate heat
Fat helps the body retain warmth
Extra virgin olive oil/avocado/coconut milk (lightly used)/sesame oil (small amounts/tahini
Warming meals & preparations
Best cold-weather plant based dishes:
Thick vegetable stews/lentil or bean soups/root vegetable curries/congee with ginger & scallions/chili with warming spices/braised greens with garlic/baked sweet potatoes with cinnamon & tahini/Miller porridge with cloves and nutmeg
Warming drinks (very important)
Ginger tea/cinnamon tea/turmeric latte/hot lemon water with ginger/chicory root/dandelion root tea
Avoid a iced drinks - they slow digestion and reduce body eat
Foods to limit in extreme cold
These cool the body:
Raw salads/smoothies/cold fruit/excess citrus/coconut water/iced beverages
