I was forced into taking a this tight portrait shot when we spotted this beautiful cinnamon colored black bear. I had an 800 mm lens on my camera and could not risk removing the time it would take to remove the extender 2X. In Grand Teton National Park, black bears (Ursus americanus) are a common sight, but despite their name, they are not always black. The species exhibits a wide range of coat colors, which can sometimes lead to confusion with grizzly bears.
Black bears in Grand Teton can be:
Black: This is the most common color for black bears in many parts of the country, especially in the East, but less so in the West.
Dark brown, light brown, or cinnamon: These are often referred to as "cinnamon phase black bears."
Blonde: Some black bears have very light, blonde coats.
