When do you need an ISBN
ISBN is a International STandard Book Number that one obtains and it is country specific. In Canada it is free and gos through our National Library.
You’ll want (or need) an ISBN if:
  • You want bookstores or libraries to carry it
  • You plan wide distribution (Indigo, Barnes & Noble, wholesalers)
  • You want to be listed in global book databases
  • You want to appear more “traditionally published”
📌 Each format needs its own ISBN:
  • Paperback = 1 ISBN
  • Hardcover = 1 ISBN
  • eBook = 1 ISBN (optional but common)
KDP / Amazon
Amazon KDP specifics (important)
  • KDP does not require an ISBN.
  • Amazon assigns an ASIN automatically
  • BUT you can not sell it anywhere else.
⚠️ Note: If you use a free Amazon ISBN, Amazon is listed as the publisher (not you).
I hope this helps. Also other places to sell your books is through Etsy.
