The Sallie House
In the small town of Atchison, Kansas, sits a house with an interesting history. The house was built in the mid-1800s and was the home and medical practice of Dr. Charles Finney.
*The Story of Sallie*
As the story goes, one day, a woman came seeking medical attention with her 6-year-old daughter, Sallie, who had collapsed from extreme abdominal pain. After examining her, the doctor realized she had appendicitis and needed surgery immediately. With no hospital nearby, the doctor decided to operate there, or risk the girl dying.
He gave Sallie some anesthesia, but in the haste of trying to save her life, he didn't allow the anesthesia to take full effect. As he made the first cut, the girl screamed in pain, and he cut into her deeper than he meant to, and she bled out and died. However, there is no evidence to back up this story, so it is unknown whether it is true.
*What Made the House Famous*
The story of Sallie began in 1992, when Debra and Tony Pickman moved into the house. At first, nothing unusual happened, but after a few months, odd things started to happen. Lightbulbs would frequently burn out, the oven would turn on by itself, and electrical devices would stop working and then start again with no clear reason.
At first, the couple thought these problems were just due to old wiring. But things got worse when their dog started barking and growling in the nursery. One day, they came home and found all the stuffed animals in the nursery arranged in a circle on the floor. Worried someone had broken in, they searched the house but didn't find anyone or any sign of a break-in.
After putting their baby to bed and leaving the nursery, they would come back to find the toys on the floor again. This happened several times, making them more anxious. They asked Tony’s brother, Larry, for help. He experienced the odd things happening and feeling unsettled, they left the house and stayed with Tony’s mother. She talked to the family who used to live there, and remembered only small, odd things, like children blaming a girl named Sallie for their toys being all over the floor. She thought Sallie was just an imaginary friend and left it at that.
Larry got in touch with a psychic, who said, without ever visiting the house, that the spirit of a young girl named Sallie was there. The psychic said Sallie was harmless and just wanted to be part of the family, which made the Pickmans feel better at first. But soon, things got worse.
Tony's other brother, George, had come to the house, though he was skeptical about the paranormal. George experienced one of the toys moving, and as he turned to run away, he found himself paralyzed, unable to move. After a few moments, he could move again. Tony and Debra were so afraid that they grabbed the baby and left the house. As they made their way to the car, Tony got a terrible pain in his back. He inspected the area of pain, noticed 3 deep scratches that drew blood.
Unable to move due to financial constraints, they tried to live with the spirit in their home. Guided by a psychic, Debra became nurturing toward Sallie, while Tony endured escalating paranormal harassment, including scratches, disturbing dreams, and physical attacks. Debra dismissed Tony’s experiences, but events worsened with the appearance of a second, more menacing spirit and random fires that would start in the house.
The haunting soon affected their baby and drew the attention of a ghost-hunting TV show, which documented Tony being attacked. The haunting became well known to the public, leaving the family in increasing distress. Debra finally started to notice that something was very wrong in their home once Tony convinced her to take his concerns seriously.
The medium offered to cleanse the house, but Debra wanted the spirit of Sallie to remain. The ritual went wrong, and Tony was attacked, which left with eight deep scratches. After that, the spirits grew even more aggressive, and the lack of sleep and constant stress made Tony's emotions swing wildly, from anger to paranoia, and sometimes he blacked out. Things got worse when Tony was pushed by something invisible at the top of the stairs. He broke the railing but didn't fall all the way down.
This finally made Debra realize how much danger they were in, and the couple decided they couldn't stay in the house any longer. Within two weeks, they packed up and moved out, hoping to escape the constant paranormal activity.
*The Aftermath*
More new tenants would move into the house, but the ghost stories continued to circulate, and soon the house became a tourist attraction. Some people believe the only spirit haunting the house is Sallie, but others have identified other spirits as well. It is also believed that a malicious spirit haunts the house and is, in fact, a demon who was slowly possessing Tony. A pentagram was found painted on the basement floor, and despite several attempts to remove it, the pentagram remains. It is unknown when or how the pentagram became painted on the floor but it would be attributed to the hauntings.
The Sallie House has been investigated by many TV shows and YouTube paranormal groups. They have documented similar experiences, with some capturing the TV turning on by itself and balls rolling down the stairs.
