SELF-DENIAL FOR THE SAKE OF CHRIST (Lk 9:22-25)
Jesus' life was destined for the cross, but at the same time for the resurrection: the two realities are inseparable. The cross without Easter would be defeated; Easter without the cross would be a rootless dream. Here, dear brothers and sisters, is the message of today's Gospel. Jesus doesn't immediately tell us: "Take up your cross." He knows well that if we took it up alone, with our pride and our "ego" still at the center, that cross would crush us. Therefore, the first word is different, more radical and liberating: "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself."
Denying oneself doesn't mean despising oneself, but shifting the center: no longer me in first place, but Him. It's a daily, concrete, almost silent gesture.
