I have not worked hands-on nursing care for over 15 years but I still do not agree with this practice. I know there is a "duty of care' but this is legalized abuse as far as I am concerned. Nursing unions do not agree with it but employers are allowed to continue. Governments don't seem to understand the harm this does to a nurse and apparently do not care the potential harm this poses to a patient
There ARE better answers, better solutions than offering more $$ to an individual nurse for the overtime. The money IS NOT worth the risk
I will be devoting a whole chapter to this issue in the second.edition of "Nursing: A Wicked Profession"
You must have your say as well. What are your ideas around the mandatory overtime practice?
