Is twitter worthwhile at the beginning?

Hey so I've been wondering if there's any point in creating some kind of presence on twitter at the beginning of your career for an artist or marketer (say, at the beginning of a campaign for a debut project once there's a real marketing campaign behind it) or if that energy's better saved for the point when you've already build a name for yourself. I'd love to hear everyone's opinion on it as I've never really used the platform before.
