If you asked me what ONE habit has had the biggest impact on my productivity, stress levels and consistency over the years...
My answer would be simple - Getting up early and winning the morning.
The secret to winning the morning actually starts the night before.
I set my alarm for 5:30am every weekday, Because that hour before the rest of the house wakes up is priceless (rest of the house = kids😅)
It's my head start - It's when I answer emails, check all of your accounts, enjoy my coffee (now coffee with black tea mix), get organised and prepare for what's coming ahead.
On the rare days I sleep until 6:15 or 6:30, I notice the difference immediately.
I wake up behind and in chaos...
The kids are awake.
We're all fighting for the bathroom.
Breakfast needs making.
I need to make sure my 12 year old actually eats something instead of spending her whole morning in the bathroom with her "make-up" experiments (literally the pain of my existence right now!)
Questions start flying and my morning peace has gone along with my sanity...
When my morning head start is gone I feel I am chasing my tail the rest of the day!
But none of that is decided by my alarm clock...
It's decided by what time I went to bed the night before.
For me, 6.5 –7 hours is my sweet spot.
So just to be clear - Just getting up early after only 4-5 hours of sleep doesn't make you productive...
It just makes you a tired zombie who ripped themselves out of bed early.
After years of trying different evening routines this is the game changing sequence of events that work for me:
Around 9:30pm I start winding down. I'll make myself a hot drink - usually herbal tea with the wife, but sometimes Horlicks or even a low-sugar hot chocolate. That's my cue that the day's coming to an end.
After that, at 10pm my phone gets plugged in OUTSIDE the bedroom (honestly, one of the best changes I've ever made), and I read for about 20–30 minutes before lights out. I aim to be asleep by 10:30pm.
When I wake up the next morning, I'm on 100%... and so is my phone. 😄
And just so you know, me and my wife use one of those cheap €5 PEEPIPIPI alarm clocks, not our phone!
Then at the weekends you can let go! Enjoy a late night with your partner and/ or kids on the couch, have a drink or 2 and appreciate the moment instead of treating it like "just another night". You will start to look forward to, and really appreciate that well earned late night - trust me! 💪😎
