Learning formula roughly 40% knowledge + 60% application/test reasoning
For example, instead of stopping at:
“Bowen = differentiation, triangles, multigenerational transmission.”
Immediately follow it with:
A client repeatedly becomes emotionally reactive when conflict develops between her mother and sister. She feels responsible for keeping peace between them. Which Bowenian concept BEST explains this dynamic?
learn to identify what the stem is actually testing, eliminate attractive distractors, and justify why one answer is better than the others.
For your NCE groups, I’d build every topic around four questions:
  1. What do I need to know?
  2. How will the NCE disguise it in a scenario?
  3. What distractor will tempt me?
  4. Why is the correct answer better—not just correct?
That last one is huge. 🔥
Learn to start understanding why “two answers look right” drills because that appears to be where many people get frustrated.
Learn hierarchy:
FIRST → safety/assessment before intervention
BEST → most clinically appropriate response
NEXT → what follows from what already happened
MOST appropriate → counseling scope, ethics, developmental level, theory
INITIAL → don't jump three steps ahead
So your Wednesday tutoring could shift from something like:
Learn theory → memorize → quiz
to:
Learn the concept → show NCE-style vignette → dissect stem → eliminate distractors → defend answer → timed application set.
And I would make students explain answers aloud:
“I chose B because ___.”
“A is tempting because ___, but it is wrong because ___.”
That is where you will hear whether they actually understand the NCE.
I already teach the material. Start distinguishing your program now by learning how the exam thinks, especially when you think, “I knew all of this, but the questions were nothing like what I studied.”
