That night, I couldn’t sleep a wink. My mind kept replaying his words over and over again. How can a human being be so cruel? My heart filled with rage. More than angry, I was deeply hurt. The nerve to call me at that time of the night just to upset me.
What? You don’t want the baby? Fine. But not wanting the whole community — including your ex — to know about the baby felt extreme.
I kept asking myself painful questions. Am I too ugly for him to be ashamed of me?Don’t I belong? What is possibly wrong with me for me to deserve this treatment? I was furious. I cried so hard that night I couldn’t even think straight. For once, I wasn’t even thinking about the baby. My heart was too shattered.
The next morning, I woke up very early determined to confront him. The moment I heard the front door open, I stepped out of my room with the face of someone who hadn’t slept all night. My eyes were swollen from crying, my chest heavy with anger.
“Why would you say that to me?” I asked immediately.
I began nagging him, demanding answers. Instead of calming the situation, he became defensive and started saying even more hurtful things.
“I just don’t want people finding out about us,” he said coldly. “Especially my children’s mother.”
“Oh, so you still love her?” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Then go back to her!” I shouted. “She knows I live here with you. She knows I sleep in your room anytime she drops the kids off. But now you don’t want her to know I’m pregnant? That’s ridiculous!”
He shouted back, “Yes! I don’t want her to find out. What’s your problem?”
That sentence hit me harder than anything else.
I broke down instantly.
At that moment, I felt like the biggest mistake I had ever made was trusting him and moving in with him. I called him evil. I told him he had destroyed me emotionally.
He had spent years with that British woman. They travelled together, built a family together, and created memories together. He sponsored trips to Africa for her, her daughter, and their children. He bought her a car. The whole community knew them as husband and wife.
Then after the divorce, he disappeared from everyone’s lives for three years — even distancing himself from his own children. He bought himself a two-bedroom apartment and then met me.
Sometimes when I thought deeply about it, I pitied him. I believed maybe he was still broken from his past relationship. I tried to excuse his behaviour because I thought he was hurting inside. But I had done nothing wrong.
I could not continue paying for the pain another woman caused him.
You never took me out.We never travelled together. You never celebrated my birthdays. You never bought me gifts or made me feel special. So what exactly did I do wrong to deserve this punishment?
At first, I tried to justify his behaviour. Since he was the only one paying the bills and mortgage while I was too sick to work, I thought maybe he was under pressure. Maybe life was overwhelming him. I kept making excuses for him because I wanted peace.
But after those words, I realised something painful.
He simply did not love me the way I deserved to be loved.
We argued heavily that morning until I finally walked back into my room and cried alone again. I felt abandoned, unwanted, and emotionally broken. It honestly felt like the whole world was against me.
But even in the middle of that pain, one thing became clear to me.
I never regretted getting pregnant.
Not even for one second.
As I held my stomach through tears, I whispered to my unborn baby, “We have each other.”
I promised my child that no matter how hard life became, I would do everything in my power to make sure they felt loved, protected, and cared for.
I said those words while crying uncontrollably, knowing I had nothing at that moment except hope.
