Scott
Positive and proactive player who is willing to move forward and take attacking opportunities. He uses his reach well, covers a useful amount of court and is comfortable when handling pace.
His attacking instincts can place opponents under considerable pressure. His best passages occur when he reaches the kitchen under control and keeps his technique compact. Smashes out some amazing shots but they can be balanced out by 'short-hopping' the ball and moving forwards whilst contacting the ball resulting in being off balance. Noticably, the longer your rally, the more points you win.
Strengths
- Positive attacking intent.
- Good reach and court coverage.
- Confident moving towards the kitchen.
- Comfortable dealing with faster balls.
- Willingness to take responsibility for high and middle balls.
- Capable of sustaining pressure when balanced.
Development priorities
- Adopt a lower and wider ready position.
- Keep the paddle in front after every contact.
- Use shorter volley actions at the kitchen (shorter swing).
- Avoid using a full swing during quick exchanges.
- Take adjustment steps instead of reaching or lunging.
- Distinguish between a high attackable ball and a low ball requiring control - be patient :).
- Recover immediately after attacking or being pulled wide.
Your power is most effective when it comes from a stable position and compact action. You do not need to manufacture pace from a ball below net height - develop your slow game and wait for a mistake (then Hulk Smash). Try to have a more straight through action rather than relying on spin which can sometimes result in being mistimed.
Simple cue: “Compact first, power second.”
