Last week we started our anaerobic Gram-positive rods with Actinomyces…
This week we’re moving into a BIG one 👀
👉 Clostridium spp.
🧠 Key Characteristics:
• Gram-positive rods
• Anaerobic
• Spore-forming
• Found in soil, the environment, and the intestinal tract depending on the species
• Several clinically important species produce powerful toxins
🔬 Why is this group so important?
Because Clostridium includes organisms associated with:
💩 Antibiotic-associated diarrhea
🩸 Gas gangrene/myonecrosis
💪 Spastic paralysis
🫠 Flaccid paralysis
And YES… you need to know how to tell them apart 👀
💡 Think Pattern:
👉 Anaerobic + Gram-positive rod + spores = think Clostridium
This week we’re learning the FAMILY first.
Next week…we’re separating the relatives 😏🔬
