PREDATOR PROTECTION
💡 One thing I’ve learned over the years keeping poultry is that predator protection is one of the most important investments you can make.
As you can see in the photos below, I use a range of different mesh types and the majority of my pens are actually double meshed.
The reason for this is:
one layer helps protect against larger predators like foxes, coyotes and dogs, while the second layer helps stop rats and smaller predators getting through.
It creates an extra layer of protection and gives me far more peace of mind, especially overnight 👌🐓
If you’re building pens on a budget, you can often find hardware cloth and welded mesh cheaper on:
• Facebook Marketplace
• eBay
• local farm suppliers
• agricultural merchants
• fencing suppliers
In the UK, places like B&Q, Screwfix and agricultural fencing suppliers can be useful, while in the US a lot of poultry keepers use stores like Tractor Supply, Lowe’s and Home Depot for hardware cloth and pen materials 👌
