If you're not at the table you’re on the menu
If you’re not at the table you’re on the menu
It’s a blunt, wake-up call of a sentence: “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” It sounds a bit harsh, doesn’t it? But life isn't always a polite dinner party. This quote is a masterclass in understanding agency, the power you have to control your own destiny. It tells us that in this world, there are participants, and there are resources. If you aren't the one making the decisions, you are likely the one being affected by them.
To live your best life, you have to earn your seat at the table. Anything less than your best effort isn't just "okay" it’s a risk.
The Table vs. The Menu: A Metaphor
Imagine life is a Grand Gala. The people at the table are the ones who did the work. They studied the guest list, they practiced their social skills, and they brought something valuable to the conversation. They are deciding what the future looks like.
The people on the menu are the ones who showed up unprepared. They hoped things would just "work out." Because they didn't bring a plan or a purpose, they become the tools used by others to achieve their goals. They are the "side dishes" in someone else’s success story.
"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." Seneca
Why "Good Enough" Isn't Enough
We often hear that we should be kind to ourselves, and that’s true. But there’s a difference between self-care and self-sabotage. When we give 60% effort, we are essentially leaving 40% of our lives up to chance. Why settle for the scraps of a life you could have owned?
If you are a student, being "at the table" means mastering your craft so you can choose your career. If you are an athlete, it means training so hard that the coach has to play you. In your personal life, it means being so self-aware that your emotions don't control you. You control them.
If you don't bring your best, you are essentially telling the world, "I don't mind if you decide my value for me."
The Power of Being Fully Prepared
Preparation is the armor you wear into the world. It’s what transforms "I hope I can" into "I know I will." Being prepared means:
Developing Skills: So you are too valuable to be ignored.
Mental Toughness: So you don't crumble when the "menu" looks tempting.
Vision: Knowing exactly which table you want to sit at.
Thought-Provoking Questions
Take a second to really think about these:
In your current job or relationship, are you the one helping set the direction, or are you just following someone else's lead?
If your life was a book, would you be the author or just a character someone else is writing?
What is one area of your life where you have been "lazy," and what is the cost of that laziness?
Exercises to Claim Your Seat
1. The Mirror Audit (Mindset)
Stand in front of a mirror and ask yourself: "If I were hiring someone to run my life, would I hire the person I see right now?" If the answer is "maybe" or "no," write down three things you need to change today to become a "must hire.
2. The "Seat" Strategy (Action)
Pick one goal you have. Identify the "table" where decisions about that goal are made.
Example: If you want a promotion, the "table" is the management meeting.
Your Task: Write down three specific "preparations" you can do this week to prove you belong in that space (e.g., finishing a project early, learning a new software, or speaking up in a meeting).
Final Thought
Life is going to happen whether you’re ready or not. You can either be the one with the fork and knife, deciding how to carve out your future, or you can be the one being served up to satisfy someone else's ambitions.
The seat is there. Are you prepared enough to take it?
