My default is to be a perfectionist. These were commissions I did when I was 25. They were some of my first portraits. I was scared to death to do them. I was afraid of failing and disappointing my client who came to my by a friend who referred her to me. She trusted me. I didn’t trust myself. From a hunger to be excellent and with an aim to please, I put about forty hours or more into each of these. I used whatever skills I learned in high school art classes to support me along the way. I got advice from my professional artist uncle. My efforts paid off. She loved them so much. I did three others in the same commission. She hired me to do two more right after. I charged $500 a piece for each of these and it was because I didn’t realize how well I would end up doing them or how much time they would take. I ended up charging 1,000 for 1 and 2,000 for the next two portrait commissions (after the original 5). My belief in myself grew. It can take time. The journey has been amazing!
