What Is Religion to a Human?
🕊️ Religion is Not Just Belief. It's a Human Need.
Religion serves several deep human needs that go far beyond doctrine or ritual.
Humans need narrative. Religion provides a story where your existence has significance beyond random chance. The brain fears the unknown. Religion reduces existential anxiety by providing answers and assurance.
Religion gives clear guidelines:
- Right vs wrong
- How to treat others
- Consequences for actions
We are tribal creatures. Religion satisfies the deep need to belong to something larger than ourselves. In times of grief, loss, or trauma: prayer offers solace, faith provides strength
And belief in an afterlife eases the pain of death.
Self-esteem needs a foundation. For billions, religion provides that unconditional worth. We crave awe and wonder and our religious experience activates the same brain regions as love, beauty, and profound meaning.
Religion is humanity's attempt to answer the one question science never can:
'What does it all mean?'
