Testimonies: Handwriting Rewires Your Brain
I'm a writer. I always use a pen, a beautiful pen and a beautiful notebook. Writing becomes a gorgeous aesthetic experience.
I'm a 64 year old Calligrapher. I'm glad to know that my beautiful writing is helping my cognitive ability as well!
I can’t go grocery shopping without a list.
Sometimes I forget the list at home. But if I’ve written it down I remember what I wrote.
The mere act of writing it down helps me envision what is on a piece of paper that I don’t have with me.
I’ve noticed my handwriting has become very sloppy. It wasn’t always so. I’ve purchased a handwriting booklet and tablet, as well as a new pretty pen. I’ve been practicing daily. Not only is my handwriting helping me slow down and become more present, I believe I’m even thinking more clearly.
I'm 76. Recently, I started journaling using cursive writing. I was shocked at how poorly my writing had become. My script was once ppraised. Now, 3 months later I'm writing 3-4 times per week. My script is improving and my thoughts clearer. It's not just brain changes, it's muscular changes.
I’m a retired English teacher. I’ve been horrified for years that education moved away from cursive and toward the keyboard. Science has recognized the value and benefits of handwriting for decades; but rather than teach children to write, education has ignored this research—and students have suffered for it. That ability to write and read cursive will continue to deteriorate, leading to less effective brain function. There is a link between the hand and the brain. Good video.
I´m a psychologist, and sometimes I recommend handwriting as therapy. It uses the physical act of writing to: (1) improve mental well-being, (2) reduce stress, (3) process emotions, and (4) improve cognitive functions like memory, attention and - obviously - language. Handwriting engages more brain areas than typing.
I am retired but write every day through my journal. I love sending handwritten cards which surprises most yet as they love it. We have forgotten the intimacy of writing and the connection it has to your heart, soul and not just your brain. Try simple poetry too...no one has to see it
Writing down my head full of sometimes confused ideas is the best way to sort my thoughts out and clear brain pathways.
I haven’t dreamt in forever. I started reading the Bible and journaling my thoughts on it, as well as transcribed some of my day, and suddenly I was dreaming again. It think it does awaken something in the brain and spirit to do this.
