💡 Daily History Fact
Bread was NEVER rationed in Britain during World War II. Instead, the government introduced the "National Loaf" in 1942—a gray, mushy bread made from wholemeal flour to save shipping space. While people complained about the texture, you could buy as much of it as you wanted.
The real shock came AFTER the war ended. Due to a massive global wheat shortage and a shattered domestic economy, the government was forced to ration bread for the first time ever in July 1946.
Imagine surviving six years of world war only to have your bread restricted after winning! Rationing didn't fully end in Britain until 1954.
