Παιώνιος (pye-OH-nee-oss). Healer. The one who mends. ❤️‍🩹 In the Greek Magical Papyri she's called a healer, a helper, a bringer of aid. Paionios shares its root with Paian, the healing-cry Apollo carries as physician of the gods. The goddess who walks the underworld also knows the way back to health. For shadow workers (like you and me 😉) that distinction matters. Hekate heals because she's chthonic. She’s not love and light. You don't get real healing from something that's never been down. You get it from the one who's walked the floor and come back knowing the route. The wound and the medicine are in the same hand...which is exactly what you're doing when you go into the dark on purpose and come back with something useful. Something wise. Here's the part the work doesn't advertise: healing runs on its own clock, and most of it is waiting. I’ve been without my laptop for twelve days. It conked out before I could edit my video (which was already late because of family things). It was in the Genius Bar for seven days getting the trackpad replaced. Just a laptop, sure. But the mend I needed came exactly when it came. Not one day faster for all my wanting. Not one day faster for all my wanting, and then, quietly, it was done. That's how the healing usually goes. You wait through the broken-open part, convinced nothing's happening, and then one day you look up and the wound has closed. I’ve got my computer back now, and I’m eyeing it suspiciously like it will crash again. But the truth is, that suspicion is its own little wound. It’s the part of me that doesn't quite trust the mend held. And that's worth naming too, because shadow work does the same thing. You heal, and then you keep flinching at the spot, waiting for it to break again. Healing is learning, slowly, to stop bracing against a thing that's already done its worst. Hekate isn't only the goddess of the crossroads. I’ve always felt that her power runs vertical. In Hesiod's Theogony she moves through earth, sea, sky, and the underworld. She's the axis mundi made divine: the road from the deepest dark straight up to the light. That's the real shape of shadow work. Healing isn't climbing away from the dark. It’s traveling the whole column. Descend to what you buried, pick it up, carry it back…transmute it into wisdom. Her keys unlock the way down. Her torches light the way back to divinity. Jung called the buried part the shadow (hence shadow work) the pieces we exile because they don't fit our story. And what we bury leaks out sideways. We spot it in other people: the trait that makes your skin crawl is usually the one you won't admit you carry too. My screen's still dark this week. I haven’t gotten any word on my computer yet. I failed to finish editing the Underworld Floor video before my computer went kaput.
