One of the easiest ways to get children writing without the usual resistance is to start with a character they already care about from Harry Potter. Try this quick activity 👇
✨ Magical Character Snapshot
Ask your child to choose a character (for example, Hermione, Ron, Luna, Draco, or even a magical creature). Print out a picture.
Then help them complete these sentence starters:
🧙 This character is the kind of person who…
👀 When you first see them, you notice…
🗣️ They often say things like…
💭 Deep down, they worry about…
⭐ Their greatest strength is…
Encourage your child to give specific details, not just “nice” or “brave.” You can ask:
“What does that look like?”
“When have we seen that in the story?”
This helps children move from simple descriptions to more thoughtful, detailed writing, which is a big step forward in school too.
💡 Tip: Keep it short and low-pressure. Even 4 to 5 good sentences is a win.
Then ‘act’ as that character! Get the whole family envolved!
If you try this at home, come back and tell me:

👉 Which sentence they found easiest or hardest
