Guitar related, maintenance question...

What have you all found, or done that worked... for sharp fret edges?

Without totally chewing up the nice fretboard wood finish?!!!

I know could buy and use a small metal file, but have a feeling that might make marks and accidental scratches/gouges.

Would a womans nail file stick do it more slow and gently to avoid damaged finish?

Also looking for most budget options as money is not growing on trees in my current situation.
