Leading a team is a lot like being a parent to a group of highly capable, grown-up children. You want them to thrive, to feel valued, and to not burn out. But then there’s the higher-ups who expect results, efficiency, and the occasional miracle.
And sometimes, those two things collide.
Ever had to tell someone to slow down and take a break while simultaneously reporting upwards that “of course, we’ll meet the deadline”? Or tried to balance being an empathetic leader with not looking like you’re running a luxury spa?
That’s the dance. One foot in the reality of your team’s well-being, the other in the world of expectations and targets. And you? You’re right in the middle, doing your best not to pull a muscle.
At the end of the day, leadership isn’t just about delivering results it’s about making sure your people can deliver results without running themselves into the ground. And if that means occasionally using creative interpretations of deadlines or sneaking in an “unauthorized” coffee break, so be it.
Because a happy, healthy team always outperforms a burned out one. And I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise (politely, of course).
