Creating a strong, healthy team culture isn’t something you “implement.” You grow it. And like any good plant owner knows, growth takes time, care, and the occasional re-potting.
So how do we cultivate a culture where people thrive?
1. Plant the right seeds.
Start with trust, psychological safety, and shared purpose. Without these, you’re just sprinkling water on rocks. People want to feel safe to grow. That’s your job!
2. Water consistently.
Check in. Celebrate wins. Have real, honest conversations not just status updates. What you talk about is not always the most important it’s that you care that are important. A thirsty team won’t bloom.
3. Pull the weeds.
Toxic behavior, unclear expectations, lack of accountability these things spread fast if left unchecked. Be the leader they expect you to be. Rise up and uproot early.
4. Give sunlight.
Recognize effort. Encourage growth. Let people stretch toward their own goals, not just yours. As a leader you give sun you do never bath in others. That might be hard sometimes but it pays off in the long run.
5. Change the soil when needed.
If things aren’t growing, it might be time to rethink roles, workflows, or even mindset. Don’t be afraid to replant in better conditions.
Building culture is messy, organic, and wonderfully human. But when you nurture it with care, it becomes the thing that holds your team together even when the storm hits. So don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty, it’s fun and you will grow whit your team!
And yes, sometimes it helps to have a good watering can (and a sense of humor).
