💬 Ask Bobbie Wednesday
“Do I really need a protein shake after every workout?”
This is one of the most common questions in fitness—and social media has made it more confusing than it needs to be.
The Short Answer
No.
You need enough protein throughout the day, not necessarily a protein shake after every workout.
A shake is simply a convenient way to help meet your daily protein needs.
🧬 What Does the Research Say?
Current sports nutrition research shows that resistance training and adequate protein intake work together to stimulate muscle protein synthesis (muscle repair and growth). However, your total daily protein intake is generally more important than drinking a shake immediately after training.
For women who train regularly, the International Society of Sports Nutrition recommends approximately:
  • 1.4–2.2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day
  • Spread across the day in multiple meals
  • Aim for roughly 0.32–0.38 g/kg of high-quality protein around training when practical, especially after exercise.
🍗 Food vs. Protein Shake
Both work.
Examples that provide a similar amount of protein:
  • Greek yogurt + fruit
  • Eggs with toast
  • Chicken and rice
  • Cottage cheese
  • A whey or plant-based protein shake
Choose whichever fits your schedule and preferences.
What This Means for Everyday Women
If you train at 6 a.m. and can’t eat breakfast immediately, a shake can be incredibly convenient.
If you’re going home to eat eggs or yogurt within an hour or two, you’re probably getting what your body needs.
Consistency matters far more than perfection.
🐐 GOATGETheR Take
Stop chasing the “perfect anabolic window.”
Instead, focus on:
✅ Eating enough total protein.
✅ Strength training consistently.
✅ Sleeping well.
✅ Recovering between sessions.
Those four habits will have a much bigger impact than stressing over whether you drank your shake 20 or 60 minutes after your workout.
📝 Practical Challenge
Today, don’t count your protein by meal.
Count your daily total.
Then ask yourself:
Did I eat enough protein today—or did I just have one high-protein meal?
You may be surprised where the gaps are.
