The 'Great' Portuguese Food Revolt?
On this day in Portuguese history, May 19, 1917, the government declared a state of siege and martial law in Lisbon as thousands of hungry citizens took to the streets. Grocers were raided, warehouses were breached, and the army was deployed to restore order.
This historic event is named after the one specific food item that citizens were furious about because they believed shopkeepers were hoarding it to drive up the price.
Three of these are real historical food protests around the world, but only ONE is the true name of the Portuguese revolt of May 19th.
Which one is it?
A) The Bread Riot (A Revolta do Pão)
B) The Codfish Mutiny (O Motim do Bacalhau)
C) The Potato Revolt (A Revolta das Batatas)
D) The Sardine War (A Guerra das Sardinhas)
