🚨 LIGHTSTREAM IS CLOSED TO NEW LOANS
If LightStream was on your funding list, take it off.
As of this past weekend, LightStream (Truist's online lending arm) is no longer accepting personal loan applications. Their website now says so outright.
What happened
On October 14, Truist agreed to sell $7.7 billion of unsecured consumer loans to Carlyle Group. It announced the sale with its Q3 earnings. Truist's CEO described the move as simplifying the company and focusing its resources. Translation: they're getting out of the online personal loan business.
If you already have a LightStream loan
👉🏽Your loan isn't going away. Keep making your payments on time.
👉🏽You can still log in and manage your account.
👉🏽 Nothing has changed with servicing or payment instructions yet. If a transfer notice shows up in your mail or email, read it carefully and confirm it's legit before you send money anywhere new.
If you were planning to apply
LightStream was one of the go-to lenders for strong-credit borrowers: big amounts, low rates, fast funding.
That door is shut, so the playbook shifts:
  1. Know your strongest bureau first. Lenders don't all pull the same report.
  2. Prequalify with soft pulls before any hard inquiry. Lenders like Upgrade, Prosper, Avant, LendingClub and SoFi offer rate checks that don't hit your score.
  3. Check your banks and credit unions. Existing relationships often get the best terms.
  4. Fix utilization before you apply. A clean file with maxed cards still gets capped.
The lenders change. The strategy doesn't. Prep the profile, then pick the lender.
