Quick mindset reminder for every freelancer in here (especially on Upwork):
Never assume what a client is going to pay you...either right now or down the line.
We’ve all had that moment: a client messages you, accepts your $15/hr rate (or whatever your starting rate is), and your brain instantly files them into the “small project” or “low-budget” category. You might even respond a little slower, give slightly less energy, or mentally write them off for bigger opportunities.
Don’t do it.
Real example from my own experience:
A client came out of nowhere, accepted my $15/hr rate, and we started talking about the project. I asked the simple question: “What’s your budget for this?”
He said “$2K.”
That one project turned into three total contracts because I didn’t assume, didn’t judge, and treated him like he could be my best client from day one (because he actually became one - still my favorite client to this day).
Clients don’t always lead with their full budget. Sometimes they’re testing the waters, sometimes they have phased budgets, sometimes they just want to see if you’re professional before they start talking real numbers with you.
The moment you start treating people differently based on perceived budget, you risk losing the ones who would have paid you the most. (And don't forget, long-term contracts pay you a lot over time too! Tons of opportunities like that on Upwork)
So here’s the rule I live by:
  • Ask about budget early and respectfully.
  • Give every client your A-game from the first message.
  • Never prejudge!!
