A little deeper into the dagesh
A couple were interested in going deeper into the dagesh.... If you are just beginning, this post is not for you. It is for those well into the class......
Have you ever wondered by there are dagesh in words that contribute nothing to that word?
One answer is there are different Hebrew dialects and the world teaches (mostly) Sephardic.... But, Ashkenazi Hebrew uses the dagesh to change the sound of the Tav; Yemenite Hebrew uses the dagesh to change the sound of the Gimmel. Though the dagesh does not change the sound in modern Hebrew it is believed to have changed the sound back in ancient times.
So Hebrew has a lot of pointless dagesh that have a function in other Hebrew dialects.
