What Is “Free Agency”?
Everyone is talking about free agency in the NFL right now… but what does it actually mean?
Free agency is when a player’s contract with their team expires, and they are free to sign with any team they want.
That means:
• Teams try to sign new players to improve their roster
• Players negotiate new contracts and salaries
• Some players leave their old team for a new one
Think of it like the open job market for NFL players.
If a team needs a better quarterback, receiver, or defensive player, free agency is one of the fastest ways to get one.
That’s why during free agency, you’ll hear announcements like:
➡️ “Player X signs a 3-year deal with a new team.”
For a few weeks each year, teams across the league compete to build stronger rosters before the next season.
What free agency moves have sparked your interest so far?
Which team made the biggest move? 🏈
