Offering Someone a Place of Belonging - THE EMPTY CHAIR
On a warm Saturday, neighbours gathered in the courtyard for tea. Laughter filled every table, but Maya noticed Mr. Lewis watching quietly from his balcony.
She carried an empty chair upstairs and said, “We saved a place for you.”
He hesitated, then joined them. Before long, he was telling stories about the neighbourhood from forty years ago. Children listened. Adults asked questions. A man who had felt forgotten became the gathering’s storyteller.

Belonging often begins with one person noticing who is missing. Maya did not organize a program or make a grand speech. She offered a chair and a sincere invitation.
Look around your community. Who may be watching from the edge? One welcome can turn a stranger into a neighbour—and an observer into a valued participant.
