🗣️ SPEAKING CHALLENGE: Small Talk at Work – Beyond the Basics!
🎧 Goal:
Practice making natural and professional small talk in more advanced work situations.
At this level, you’ll learn how to sound confident, polite, and engaging when talking with managers, clients, or coworkers. 💼✨
🎯 Your task:
Record a short audio (45–90 seconds) where you start and keep a small talk conversation in a realistic work situation.
Choose one of the following situations 👇
💼Choose Your Scenario:
1️⃣ You meet a client before a business meeting.
2️⃣ You run into your manager in the hallway.
3️⃣ You’re waiting for a team meeting to start.
4️⃣ You’re chatting with a new coworker during a company event.
5️⃣ You’re at a networking event meeting people from other companies.
💬 Tips to sound natural:
- Be friendly, but still professional.
- Use open-ended questions to keep the conversation flowing.
- Show genuine interest (use follow-up questions like “Oh, really?” or “How did that go?”).
- End the conversation politely and smoothly.
💡 Questions to help you prepare your recording 👇
1️⃣ Where are you and who are you talking to?
2️⃣ How do you start the conversation naturally?
👉 “It’s great to finally meet you in person.”
👉 “How’s everything going with your team this week?”
3️⃣ What topic can you use to connect?
👉 A recent project, conference, travel, weather, or weekend plans.
4️⃣ How do you show interest and keep it going?
👉 “That sounds exciting. What was the best part?”
👉 “I’ve heard about that project — how’s it going so far?”
5️⃣ How do you end politely and professionally?
👉 “Anyway, I’ll see you inside.”
👉 “It was nice chatting with you — talk soon!”
🎧 Example:
A: Hi, Mr. Lewis! How’s the conference going so far?
B: Pretty good, lots of interesting talks this year.
A: Yeah, I really liked the one on marketing trends this morning.
B: Oh, me too! Some of those ideas were really creative.
A: Definitely. Anyway, I’ll see you in the next session — nice catching up!
