Are We Really Understanding?
I have always loved this John Denver lyric:
“How do you know that animals don’t speak, just because they don’t speak to you?”
Years ago, it made me think about the other side of that question, and I wrote:
“How do you know they don’t understand us, just because we don’t understand them?”
The more time I have spent with animals, the more certain I have become that communication doesn't require spoken words.
Animals communicate with each other, and they communicate with us. They form relationships. They grieve. They comfort. They warn. They protect. They remember. And sometimes, if we are open, quiet and willing to listen in ways that go beyond our ears, they tell us exactly what we need to know about them and ourselves.
I may not be able to explain everything about how that connection happens. I don't need to.
I've experienced enough to know that it does.
Maybe the question isn't whether animals communicate with us.
Maybe we need to get better at listening to them. 💚🐾
