It means to give someone lots of COMPLIMENTS.
"Your hair looks great!"
"Stop flattering me."
"You are such a good teacher!"
"Your flattery won't make me change your grades!"
Sometimes, people flatter you because they respect you. Sometimes, they do it to GAIN something.
