The Rise of OSHA’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program (SVEP)
⚖️ Regulatory Watch: OSHA is expanding its Severe Violator Enforcement Program (SVEP), targeting companies with repeated violations.
Example:
In July 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) conducted a follow-up inspection at Vinton Steel LLC, a subsidiary of Kyoei Steel LTD, located in Vinton, Texas. This inspection revealed that the company continued to expose workers to serious hazards, including inadequate machine guarding and unsafe practices related to lifting operations. As a result, OSHA cited Vinton Steel for five repeat and two serious violations, proposing penalties totaling $269,631. Notably, Vinton Steel had been placed in OSHA's Severe Violator Enforcement Program (SVEP) in 2022 following citations for 19 serious violations and penalties amounting to $364,078.
📢 Have you seen an uptick in OSHA enforcement in your industry? What proactive steps should companies take to stay out of trouble?
