One of the most unsettling (and yet somewhat liberating) ideas in philosophy is this:
We might not be certain of anything...like… at all...
Your memories? Could be wrong.
Your senses? They get fooled all the time.
Science? Updates itself every few years.
Even this moment right now ... many philosophers would argue: how do you know you’re not dreaming?
René Descartes basically went down this rabbit hole and started doubting pretty much everything.
David Hume said we don’t even logically know that the future will resemble the past - we just assume it will.
And Ludwig Wittgenstein questioned whether “certainty” even means what we think it means.
Lowkey kinda crazy right!
So I’m curious guys:
- Do you think we can be certain about anything?
- Is there one thing you’d bet your life on being true?
- If nothing is 100% certain, does that make life scarier or more freeing?
For me, this idea is weirdly motivating.
If we can’t be totally certain, then staying curious >>> being dogmatic.
Also makes debating certain divisive topics in life way less stressful, as it suggests strong opinions should be loosely held.
