Why I teach connection first
I teach this way because children are not empty vessels waiting to be filled with skills. They are whole humans who arrive with emotions, nervous systems, relationships, and lived experiences.
Music is powerful — but only when children feel:
  • safe
  • regulated
  • connected
  • welcome
When those things are present, learning happens naturally. When they aren’t, no amount of content will stick.
This approach grew out of watching real children (my own 3) real families in my music classes, and real classrooms — and noticing that when music feels joyful, predictable, and inclusive, children lean in instead of pulling away. Connection and regulation comes THROUGH the content.
