Three things most people don't talk about with goal setting
1. Who Do You Have to Become?
Setting a goal is easy, but achieving it requires transformation. Most people focus on what they need to do to reach their goals, but the real question is, “Who do I need to become?” Every goal demands a new version of you—one who thinks, acts, and believes differently. If your goal is to create financial freedom, you might need to become someone who is disciplined with time and money. If your goal is to strengthen your marriage, you may need to develop more patience or become a better listener. The journey toward your goal is as much about personal growth as it is about crossing the finish line.
2. What Do You Have to Let Go Of?
Pursuing a goal often requires leaving something behind—habits, mindsets, or even relationships that no longer serve you. This is the part of goal setting that no one talks about because it’s hard. To move forward, you might need to let go of procrastination, self-doubt, or the fear of failure. Sometimes, it means releasing the comfort of the familiar for the unknown. Ask yourself: What am I clinging to that’s holding me back? Letting go can feel like loss, but it’s really an act of making space for the life you’re trying to build.
3. What Excuses Do You Make?
Excuses are often disguised as reasons, but they’re just obstacles we create to protect ourselves from discomfort. Whether it’s “I don’t have time,” “I’m not ready,” or “It’s too hard,” excuses keep us stuck. They give us permission to stay in our comfort zone, but growth happens when we challenge them. What excuses are you making about your goals? Call them out and ask yourself: Are these excuses serving me, or are they sabotaging me? Once you confront the excuses, you’ll find the clarity and courage to take action.
These three questions aren’t just about setting goals—they’re about aligning your actions, beliefs, and mindset with the future you’re working toward. Your goals are waiting, but the person you’re becoming on the journey is the real reward.
